POSITION SUMMARY: This position implements, manages and provides technical support for system resources (software, hardware and processes) within the IBM System z infrastructure at MIB with the goal of maintaining a stable environment for business applications and external/internal customers. Incumbents will provide technical leadership, performance evaluation/tuning, capacity planning and security administration/audit.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads planning efforts regarding new software, updated versions and modifications to the software suite supporting the IBM system z environment at MIB.

Performs the installation and service of systems software components (operating system, telecommunications, database, and/or other program products) within the IBM System z domain at MIB while maintaining a stable operating environment for business applications.

Maintains currency of software versions and applies new releases as necessary to keep software under vendor support.

Documents planning, installation, configuration and service requirements supporting System z software/hardware.

Initiates tests of software and verifies the installed software to detect errors or inconsistencies. Ensures anomalies identified are understood, mitigated or documented if acceptable.

Communicates to the user community any enhancements and new product information relevant to the environment.

The position works closely with the applications development, DBA, SQC, PQC, Operational, LAN and Security teams to resolve system level problems that affect the integrity of the business applications or processes.

Documents operational procedures required to support the environment.

Interacts with IBM and other software vendors regarding upgrade planning, problem diagnosis leading to resolution, etc.

Provides storage administration activities and capacity planning for EMC VMAX and DLM hardware.

Supports hardware requirements for planned activities such as installations and upgrades. Supports unplanned service needs, coordinating change with vendor engineers and MIB operational associates.




Performs change implementations off-shift and weekends, scheduled to ensure MIB customer service agreement levels are adhered to.

Performs the function of RACF security administration and ensures best practices are employed.

Assists with the development and implementation of specialized programs and/or routines to supplement and enhance systems software.

The position is responsible for performance monitoring of the operating systems and applications including review/adjustments to z/OS Workload Manager (WLM).

Analyzes performance indicators (using system monitors, service aids or utilities) such as response time, number of transactions per second, and number of programs being processed at once, to ensure that system is operating efficiently. Recommends/implements enhancements for improved productivity.

Participates in processor utilization monitoring and capacity planning. Reviews computer system capabilities, workflow and scheduling to determine if requested changes to the environment will meet expectations.

Provides technical skill transfer within department and to other technical employees (ex. OPS, PQC, SQC) as needed.

Participates in Business Continuance efforts which lead to meeting MIB's Disaster Recovery 'Recovery Time Objective' for the System z environment. This includes process planning, documentation currency, monitoring, recovery event support and travel to D/R site as needed.

Provides off-shift and weekend support coverage for problems related to products within their support domain. Assures MIB devices for remote support are available as required (laptop taken home).

Supports hardware changes in the environment via planning processes, IOGEN configuration changes via HCD and Power-On-Resets and event execution.

Satisfies Project Management responsibilities supporting MIB initiatives and Project Management Office.

Reviews "MIB Daily Report" and Support Desk records to ensure corrective actions taken to bring problem events to closure.

As a steward of MIB data, the associate is accountable, within the area of responsibility, for ensuring the integrity of MIB data and systems, security of confidential information, and protection of physical property.

Evaluates and recommends changes to current and future system requirements to meet the organization's needs.

Assists in maintaining documentation repositories for systems software and configurations. Refreshes configuration documentation as needed assuring accuracy.

This position remains current with new developments in the field of systems technical support by participating in continuing education programs/conferences, and by review of related literature and periodicals.

Systems Programming skill areas required: IBM z/OS and related utilities, JCL, SMPE, Unix Systems Services, DB2 for z/OS, WebSphere Application Server, MQSeries, JES2, RACF, RMM, GRS, DF/SMS, TSO/ISPF, TCPIP, VTAM, DF/SORT, SMF, RMF, SDSF, IDCAMS, HealthChecker, Vendor products (FDR, TMON suite, SAS, MXG, BETA42, MXI, EMC MFE), IPL Process, VSAM, HFS, zFS, Business Continuance/Disaster Recovery, EMX VMAX Storage Array, EMC DLM, REXX, IBM System z (Hardware, HMC, SE), IBM ServiceLink. Additionally the Senior Systems Programmer will require competency in Capacity Planning, IOGENs (HCD, IOCP, IODF processes), Performance Tuning, Security Adminstration, IBM ShopzSeries and ServerPac.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Education: 4 year degree in Computer Science (related degree or equivalent experience will be considered).
Experience: 10 years of z/OS Systems Programming, demonstrated technical practice and leadership.
Skills: Requires a demonstrated depth of knowledge within the IBM System z Server environment. Competency in installation/implementation of z/OS, its subsystems (DB2, MQSeries, WebSphere), and related vendor software. Capabilities in hardware implementations, capacity planning and security administration are expected.
Ability to work independently and lead projects across disciplines
Strong desire to learn (or possess) other platform knowledge such as Linux, Unix and Microsoft
Exceptional work ethic and Strong oral and written communication skills
