Typically you replace your skylights when they are old and start to cost you more money repairing or through energy loss than the cost of installing a new skylight to replace the inefficient old skylight. You may not need to replace your skylights, sometimes all you need is a Skylight Top.

-What can be done now that my Acrylic Skylight is ageing and need of repair?
Replace your old Acrylic top with a new Tempered Silicon Glass Low E Double Pane Argon Insulated Top.
Luckily for the consumer the economic advantage of PMMA skylight production has greatly receded over the past decade leading to an increase in the number of Silicon Glass skylight manufactures. The increase in production has been equaled with competition leading to improvements in skylight systems and materials. Today is the best time in history for the skylight consumer, pricing is at a low while quality is only increasing.
-What is Acrylic?
Polymethyl methacrylate, (PMMA), also known as acrylic. PMMA is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate and is a transparent thermoplastic. The material was developed in 1928 in several different laboratories and was first brought to market in 1933 by the Rohm and Haas Company under the trademark Plexiglas.
-Why do I have Acrylic and not glass?
Poly methyl methacrylate was used as a substitution for glass in the manufacture of skylights over the past 30 years. The switch from a classic silicon based glass windows occurred in the wave of increased plastics production and decreased cost of raw materials starting in the mid-20th century. These economic advantages, coupled with the mechanical and optic similarities of PMMA with classic glass led to a large quantity of homes utilizing non glass windows.
-Why does Acrylic not last as long as a Glass skylight
Over time PMMA composed skylights start to loose structural integrate. This is due to a number of factors. One of the most unfortunate disadvantages of PMMA is that it has a coefficient of expansion approximately 11 times larger (PMMA (5–10)×10−5 K−1 ) (Glass (8.5)×10−6 K−1 ) this difference in physical properties between silicon glass and PMMA is why cracks start to appear in your Acrylic skylights. Because PMMA expands a greater distance when exposed to changes in temperature it is far more likely to be at risk of thermal shock.
