Casting Director Tips To Get The Job

1. Be prepared. Know your craft. Auditions are your way to market your skills and demonstrate your value to the entertainment industry.

2. Be professional and courteous - to everyone- from the security guard at the front gate of the studio to the receptionist to the casting director, and everyone in the audition room. A performer’s personal behavior speaks volumes. Talent is hired on 3 things, your look. talent and your professionalism.

3. Be punctual. Casting takes place in a fast-paced environment and casting directors appreciate consideration of their time and schedules. Don’t waste their time! Be personable and responsive, but don’t talk too much or overstay your welcome.

4. Headshots and resumes. Make sure your headshot looks like you. Airbrush all you want, but you better look like just like your photo when you walk into that room. Always have extra headshots and resumes on hand at every audition.

5. Presentation. Make sure you can be seen and heard. Position yourself so that your face is visible (also, keep long hair out of your face). If you can’t be seen or heard, your performance is lost. Dressing for a role is fine, but don’t wear a costume. Wear something that suggests the character or the profession and let your performance do the rest.

6. Do your homework. Know who you are auditioning for. By researching the director, casting director, producer and show, you may find connections to other people or projects, and learn about the style or genre of a project or its creators.

7. Don’t let anything throw you. You have a right to be there, you were invited there to audition. When other performers enter the waiting room and don’t look like you, think about yourself as “the other way to go.” Often the casting process is about exploring various ways to go with a character, so stay confident and show them how you would do the role. If you’re asked to read another role or make an adjustment, take a moment, and then do your best to do what is asked of you.

8. Be gracious and receptive. Be open to direction. Don’t challenge, make excuses or try to explain yourself. Stay open and easy to direct. Casting directors may want to see if you can take direction.

9. No chit chat. They don’t want to hear about the traffic, or how your day is going. Put yourself in their position. They will meet 15-50 performers auditioning in one day. Would you want to hear 50 excuses on why you were late? Go in. Do your best work. Get out. Leave them wanting more instead of having overdosed on you.

9. Auditions, like scenes, have a beginning, middle, and an end. Walk in confidently, take charge of how you want to work, do your job and get out of the room (always leave them wanting more). Once you have left the audition, let it go. You can have a great audition and still not get the job. They just went another way.

10. Casting directors remember good work. Follow all of these steps and you will be called back by the casting director. It may be for that part or it may happen five years down the line. Each successful audition is like money in the bank. Show yourself in the best light possible by being prepared, professional and positive.

Akin to A Soldiers Tale and Peter and the Wolf, Prometheus Dance and their collaborators will engage and enlighten the listener/viewer by means of old world story telling — combined with contemporary music and dance — sending a message of triumphant kindness. Artistic Directors of Prometheus Dance Diane Arvanites and Tommy Neblett have choreographed over thirty works for Prometheus Dance as well as Nixon In China, Alceste and The Pearl Fisher for Opera Boston. They and their company, have performed and taught in Spain, France, Denmark, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Arvanites and Neblett have received numerous awards for their work, including a Creativity Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and four Artists Grants for Choreography from the Massachusetts Cultural Council; individually in 1994 and 1996, and collaboratively in 2000 and 2004. Arvanites and Neblett both teach modern dance technique, partnering and choreography at The Boston Conservatory and Walnut Hill School. They also teach open-enrollment technique classes for professionals (company class) and post-professionals (Dance for 55+) at The Dance Complex in Cambridge. They are highly involved and supportive of the local arts community, participating in grant panels with the Cambridge Arts Council and the New Hampshire Arts Council, serving on the Board of Directors of the Boston Dance Alliance, and acting as mentors for The Dance Complex Shared Choreographers Program.

The Fool Of the World and the Flying Ship will be danced by Nicole Sell Danizio, Kara Johnson, Callie Chapman Korn, Naoko Brown, Rebecca Garrison, Rachel Bertone, and Elena Greenspan.

The five musicians who comprise the heart of Solar Winds, a traditional woodwind quintet, are professionally trained instrumentalists and music educators. Their repertoire includes the most demanding compositions of the modern era, as well as the classics, arrangements, and novelty pieces that make a woodwind quintet concert such an unusual and delightful musical experience. Joined by narrator Guy Urban, Solar Winds has captivated children throughout Greater Boston with its version of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. In 2004, the group commissioned award-winning composer, John Kusiak, to create a new musical adventure. The result, The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship, is an enchanting version of the old Russian tale which has been enthusiastically applauded by audiences.

John Kusiak composes music for film, television, advertising and live performance. He has scored hundreds of projects, including television documentaries (American Experience, National Geographic), large-screen exhibitions (Yellowstone National Park and the Smithsonian) and feature films (additional music for the 2004 Academy Award winning documentary, The Fog of War). Other projects have included music for the opening film of this year’s Academy Awards program (2007), two seasons of First Person, a television series directed by Errol Morris and chosen by Time as one of the 10 best series of 2000 and commercials for United Airlines, Quaker Oats and Mastercard. Kusiak has also collaborated with Prometheus Dance on several projects including Apokalysis, Dreams and The Queen’s Spectre.

Elizabeth Rocha studied at Rhode Island School of Design and the Museum of Fine Arts School before completing her ALB at Harvard's Extension School. After years working as a children's illustrator she got coerced into creating costumes for the Fool of the World and the Flying Ship. Since then she has done work for a variety of performances including Peter and the Wolf and Mischief in the Machine. She teaches at the Brookline Arts Center and recently joined the production team at Behind the Mask.

Julia Rocha started making puppets when she was fourteen and at sixteen directed her first show, a version of the Fool of the World and the Flying Ship. Her puppets have appeared at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, Lyric Stage Company, the Arlington Center for the Arts and at First Night Boston, as well as in multiple productions at Arlington High School. She is currently an undergraduate at Bennington College where she is studying music and ceramics.

HIP HOP DANCE CLASSES. MORE ABOUT THE CLASSES. Hop to the Beat Dance Studio offers Hip Hop classes taught by David Liberge. Hip Hop is high energy street movement as seen in your favorite music videos by artists such as Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake and Usher to the hottest R&B, pop and Hip Hop music. Classes are taught in 3 week sessions (one 75 minute lesson per week for 3 weeks). Each 3 week session works on a different fun Hip Hop routine to part of a song. The classes are great for working on body isolations and movement, and are taught in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. 5. Parents should be supportive and protective. Your child will not get many of the parts they try out for. It is important for you and your child to learn to deal with rejection. There will always be another opportunity for your child. So keep it fun and light.

6. Don’t take rejection personally. Maybe today they wanted a redhead. Or perhaps they went wanted a three year old and not a two year old. Just because they didn't book this job, does not mean you did anything wrong.

7. Be professional and courteous -to everyone- from the security guard at the front gate of the studio to the receptionist to the casting director, and everyone in the audition room.

8. Teach your child to listen and be open to direction.

9. No chit chat. They don’t want to hear about the traffic, or how your day is going. Put yourself in their position. They will meet 15-50 children and parents auditioning in one day. Would you want to hear 50 excuses on why you were late?

10. Casting directors remember nice children and nice parents.

11. However successful children become, remember they are still children.

12. Make certain a show business career is what they want, not what you want.

13. Support and encourage, but don’t push.

14. Set up short term goals to promote their sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

15. Maintain balance in their lives through quality family time.

16. Never treat professional children as superior to their brothers and sisters or peers.

17. Guard against children becoming either too egotistical or too insecure as a result of their career.
